Happy Monday Morning, Y’all!
Just down the road from us a five acre *heavily* woods lot that hadn’t been touched in 30 years, was cleared to the red-clay underlayment. All the animals had no place to go. The deer herd in my neighborhood grew by two does. We have a family of foxes living behind our house along the runnel from an old springhead. Then then there are the raccoons….
Did I tell you I had stared a compost bucket? They found it. I tried several things to keep them out, including plastic, a board, and heavy rocks holding it down. They still got the top off. Hubs built me a compost spot on the ground and it’s covered and held down with bigger rocks. That kept them out. So far so good, right? Except I left out some small containers of sedums I was rooting. The blasted little boogers pulled out all the sedums and dug through the dirt! This morning I replanted the partially rooted sedums, but man, raccoons are a mess.
In my area, there are now too many animals and too little food. My neighbor has bought deer corn and a deer salt lick. I have put out fresh very ripe peaches and pears for the raccoons. I’ll be putting out fresh food the raccoons the might eat, and the foxes seem to be doing fine with all the rabbits and opossums that have come our way. I have a feeling the chickens in the coop across the way might be eaten… The rooster who taught himself how to crow this summer has been silenced. Foxes? Or Sunday fried chicken dinner?
